The lessons learned from a ted talk marathon.

I'll be watching 3 hours, starting directly after this post. Each bullet is the lesson learned from a singular video (to save you time ^_^!)

First video 0:00:00 - Nancy Etcoff on the surprising science of happiness:
Lessons learned:
People want to be happier. but we become unhappy a lot easier.
Babies are born happy and enjoy "innate pleasures," and it's all lies after that.
Happiness is attractive.
Emotions are social and contagious.
Lust isn't happiness, although makes you feel good.
Materialism fucks with true happiness (poor people have better sex)

P.s. a Rolex commercial came on directly after the video and I

Second video 0:23:30 - Dean Ornish on the world's killer diet
Lessons learned:
They copy "us." (everyone is getting fat/dieing out because they copy the US.)
Bad stuff is preventable!

Third video 0:30:30 - Mark Bittman on what's wrong with what we eat
Lessons learned:
Cows are the new bomb... don't you dare eat meat ;).
But seriously... Cow farts will kill us all!
1/2 of antibiotics in the U.S. are given to cows O.o (that's weird)
A Desire (fueled by advertising) and not a need fuels this health crisis!
DON'T EAT MEAT/JUNK FOOD, plants promote health and make you live longer!
10,000,000,000 (Yes billion) animals that we eat, are killed each year!
Food is just food if you make it yourself, don't over think it.
rethink what's healthy, organic is no longer organic.
Industrial food is killing us all. (it's not about health, it's about demand)

Fourth video 0:51:20 - David Logan on tribal leadership
Lessons learned:
Appeal who you are talking to.
Don't meet people for personal connections, make connections to further a connective, collective tribe.
p.s. just watch the video, it's really good.

Fifth video 1:02:40 - Seth Godin on the tribes we lead
Lessons learned:
"Non professionals, people with passion"
Leading is the new ads space.
Tribes: leading and connecting people and ideas.
Connecting tribes make movements!

"The beatles did not make teenagers, they lead them!"
Don't be a sheep, life your head from the grass
Tell a story to people who want to hear it, connect a tribe who wants to be connected, lead a movement, and make change.
who are you upsetting? who are you connecting? who are you leading?
challenge -> create culture -> curiosity ->commit

P.s. Most powerful message for me thus far!

I'm taking a water/bathroom break, the watch is stopped... oh and btw, this would be a lot easier to do with a google wave account ;)!

Sixth video 1:25:00 - Seth Godin on standing out
Lessons learned:
"People who spread ideas, win."
Don't interrupt/disrupt others, flow people
Too many choices + too little time = non remarkable
remarkable = worth making a remark about
Designing ingenuity means a massive audience over time
Talk to people who are listening and aggressive about listening!
Design for the early adapters not the average masses!

Seventh video 1:49:35 -Stewart Brand on the Long Now
Lessons learned:
Investigate all opportunities!
You have to go through a scary place to get a goal
trees live longer under adversity... hmmm...
thinking long term, look at the mountain.

Eigth video 2:14:40 -Robert Neuwirth on our "shadow cities"
Lessons learned:
Squatter cities are the new world city
Squatter communities give unlimited, addicting freedom
Around 2000 people is about time to start a government
Squatters AREN'T in poverty, "they are the fastest coming out of poverty
Everyone works in squatter cities

Ninth video 2:37:10 -Barry Schwartz on our loss of wisdom
Lessons learned:
The janitor's job doesn't interact with people, although they listen in and can help
Kindness care and empathy make jobs worth while in a world of loneliness
The wise person knows when to ignore the rules and improvise
Loss of wisdom is the following of rules without thought
responsibility > money + responsibility
"Ask not if it is profitable but if it is right"
Re-moralize work
Teach ethics through celebrating moral people
Kids need to learn wisdom and character, respect yourself, peers, and teachers

And the marathon is complete, check in every now and then for new posts ^^!

Servage.com

As I stated in my previous post, I said that I would find a free virtual drive service. Although I have yet to find out, I did find a rather inexpensive alternative:

http://servage.com

This has a lot of features including a handy-dandy virtual drive. And with the coupon code:

NURA

You will get 30% off for life!

File Storage

Local storage devices are not a good way to keep files safe, reliable, or easy to access! All that comes with local storage devices are undependable, expensive backup hard drives that just sit there and look ugly. This is why I employ you to look for a few new-er options, such as the following.

http://www.getgspace.com/
- This is one of my favorite options out there, mainly because it is available in Mac, Windows, and Linux; so no matter "where you go" with this little application, it'll be an option. One of the requirements is gmail, so be sure to make an account at http://gmail.com before you download this program. Unfortunately you only get 2 gigs worth with this option.

http://www.filedropper.com/
- This is another online resource for file storage. I really like filedropper because you can upload unlimited amounts of data, just as long as they are in 5gig chunks (which in most cases is far enough excess). The only downside of this option, is the lack of a standalone desktop application.

I'll update this soon once I find a good, free virtual drive service

Get "free" stuff from paypal.

until now I have mainly been white hat, and told you guys all about the better, lighter side of the internet. Now it's time to turn a corner.

First thing to do, make a fake paypal account, and send money from your real account to your fake one. The amount you send to your fake one doesn't matter, just make sure you ALWAYS use a proxy on your fake account. I recommend: proxydoll.com .

To buy anything on paypal for $0.01 follow these instructions: http://www.instructables.com/id/Paypal-hacking/

Me are legion, me are not forget, me do not forgive.

Check out my live webcam on yahoo's new free webcam service! I really like their service because it really brings together everyone with a webcam, instead of using stupid aim/yahoo/msn messengers.

live.yahoo.com/anonymous

anonymous is my username, yes, I know I'm lucky :)!

how to burn an iso to dvd or cd.

An iso is usually the format used to store operating systems on, so, it's is very important to get from an unusable iso, to a functional cd or dvd that you can boot from. When you download an iso, such as ubuntu, or other misc things. I personally recommend this iso burner, after looking at 3 other burners, this was by far the easiest and fastest to burn.

After you download and install this free software, you simply right click your downloaded iso and click "copy iso to cd."

P.S. Ask on the left if your confused.

How and where to get windows xp!

Windows xp is a very clean, fast working operating system. Vista is very shiny looking, which is nice if you want to waste your video card while your playing games half as well as you should be. of course you always have an option when it comes to getting and downgrading to xp.

For the following instructions, you'll need either:
  • A good downloading speed
  • and a DVD reader/burner

OR...

  • 140$

As you saw above, there are two ways to get xp.

  1. Torrent it, then burn it to dvd
  2. Buy it

Just click on what you want to do (choose your own fate!)

Is the world downloading world free? Only as free as your bandwidth will allow!

As was recommended, as came to be...

For all of those youngsters that haven't been tainted by the internet's true potential, consider the following, what I am about to say may be considered to be immoral by some, and a way of life for others.

For us poor people, unfortunately, we cannot afford every version of photoshop, and don't have the time to go out and buy some movie, we have to resort to downloading files called torrents on peer to peer networks (p2p.)

The most secure/largest/most user friendly torrents search out there would have to be TPB (www.thepiratebay.org) , which is great for every torrent out there!

TPB is useless without software to handle the torrentz, TPB recommends some sort of p2p client, and I cannot remember which one... but I recommend uTorrent, google it.

As for protection against the evil government, always trying to mess with our great fun, there is a little program called PeerGuardian (http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/)Which is a must have if you're paranoid, and don't wanna be caught!

P.S. Post on the left if you have any more comments!

How to access your router on xp or vista!

There are many reasons you may want to access your router, one being to set up a dns, or opening ports for hosting online game servers!
  1. click start
  2. click run
  3. type cmd
  4. click ok
    1. (an command prompt should appear)
  5. In the command prompt, type "ipconfig /all" (without quotes)
  6. The output should look something like this: image
  7. In the output look for "Default Gateway"
  8. In the example image, the default gateway is 192.168.0.1
  9. Copy and paste YOUR default gateway into a browser's address bar.
  10. If you don't know what I mean by address bar, it looks something like this: image
  11. Now simply enter your password for your router, if you don't know it, and don't remember changing it from the default, check here: http://www.routerpasswords.com/
  12. If your router default password doesn't work, talk to the "techie" of the family! or aim me: gshortyn for more help!
  13. Now if you're logged in, you should have full power over your router, and you should be able to access it at the default gateway under the same username and password at anytime

Thanks for reading my guide to you and your router!

Faster Internet, 3 simple letters! DNS!

So, if you don't know about how the internet operates, it goes a lil' something like this...

First you visit a website, like when you go to www.google.com you are connecting to their server, through a domain name server, or dns. The dns lets you go from just a name (google.com) to connect to their server. In this way dns controls what servers you connect to, and the underliying speed behind it!

Now that you know what a dns is, the dns I suggest is opendns.com , it's free, fast, and secure!

just look at the list of features they offer:

So your hosting domain names, on your computer with a static ip?

Today I'll be telling everyone how to get their own must-have for self hosting! I can't believe how long I've lived without using this service!

Basically, I spent a couple days looking into how to host my own webserver, and this is what I came up with.

What you need a static IP, if have linux it's harder to configure (by ALOT) if you aren't wired into the network. On windows, the only, or main requirement is a static IP.

In either system (windows or linux) you must have the domain pointed at your static ip, or else it won't work, it took me a day to grasp this concept before my dad helped me out :) .

For a linux webserver I suggest an ubuntu LAMP server, for windows, I suggest XP.

The website I was talking about helps by pointing your domain to your ip, for free, along with the following:

# Free DNS, Dynamic DNS, Static DNS services
# Free subdomain hosting, free domain hosting, free backup dns, reverse IPv6 DNS hosting (forward/reverse)
# Free URL redirection [web forwarding]
# Paid services available for increased account capacity
# Unlimited number of domains per account (yes really)
# 5 free shared hostnames, use anywhere
# 20 free subdomains per domain, use on your own domains only
# INSTANTLY point yourname.afraid.org or yourname.com to any IP or URL
# Supports every TLD on the Internet
# Currently 39,188 other domains besides afraid.org in our shared domain pool
# Funding is supplied by the members who go premium. Funding goes directly to servers and high bandwidth connections they reside on
# Robust support for CNAME, A, AAAA, MX, NS, TXT, LOC, RP, HINFO, SRV records
# Are you a web developer? You can use nameserver branding to name our nameservers as your own! Let us worry about the maintenance/redundancy
# Round robin DNS supported (Multiple IP addresses for 1 hostname)
# IPv6 forward AND reverse (both .int and .arpa) supported
# Dynamic DNS supported, several clients for Win32 and UNIX available
# Forward your hosts to any existing URL on the internet (even to a different port if your ISP blocks 80) with the Web Forward system
# URL cloaking redirection supported, optionally hide real URL of your site in the address bar
# Allows you to change web hosting providers without messy DNS propigation delays
# Simple, fast, flexible and reliable interface, feedback is welcome
# Works with any existing web host you may already be using for both DNS and hosting
# If your web host goes down, visitors will see a "timeout" error instead of a "site does not exist" error, e-mail will also remain queued for 5 days
# If you put a domain in afraid.org, you can edit TTL, Minimum, Allow/Deny AXFR's, and approve/disapprove others from using hosts on your domain. You can also share your domain with the users of afraid.org, or your own web site visitors using our 'webclude' feature
# Support for vanity dns hosts (example: i.knew.you.were.afraid.org) currently 39,188 domains in the shared pool
# Fast and easy setup process. Setup an account in less then 5 minutes
# Extremely reliable, fast, and redundant hosting, and interface
# All updates go live instantaneously.

So I've toyed around with my pictures and videos and want to customize them even more.

No problem at all, these programs come with preloaded goodness, but there comes a time when every person just wants more. For photoshop and gimp there are some good textures at:
http://mayang.com/textures/

For gimp, all of the plug-ins are in a nice organized website:
http://registry.gimp.org/

For photoshop, you have to do alot of time and effort to find good, free ones. Although I did find one promising site:
http://luxa.org/

For virtualdubb and some filters for photoshop head on over to:
http://www.compression.ru/video/public_filters.htm
The filters there for virtualdubb are of the HIGHEST quality, and every good for video editing!
